About
Working with people in the throes of a difficult life situations demands of us the ability to dig deep into our capacity for clarity, calm, and conscientiousness. Ethical practice means our decisions and actions are consistent with what is in the best interest of our client. With healthy boundaries we clearly communicate what we can and can’t do as professionals, and we relate in ways that make it clear what behavior we will and won’t accept. Finally, as we seek to assist our clients, we often need to use our own calm presence & skills to help de-escalate a situation, especially for clients who may be on the brink of suicidal despair, homicidal rage, or have collapsed into the dark abyss of madness. In this workshop we will investigate these unique but related skills & discuss how we can continue to increase their potency in service to our clients. Objectives: • Define ethical practice, healthy boundaries & the role of de-escalation in challenging situations • Learn how these 3 areas of professional practice are interrelated • Understand the 4 types of safety provided by the skilled use of these practices • Identify strengths & growth areas of these 3 skills • Set an intention to use strength area(s) to increase capacity in growth area(s) This training takes place 9-12pm Presenter bio: Steve Carlson, PsyD has been working in the mental & chemical health field for over 30 years.
